The following announcement was provided by the Sherborn Library.
The Sherborn Arts & Crafts Fair has been a cornerstone event for the Sherborn Community for years. Each Spring the Fair arrives, rain or shine, bringing families, friends, artisans, crafters and community groups from Sherborn and surrounding towns together for a festive day. This year, the Sherborn Arts & Crafts Fair will celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Saturday, June 2nd, 9 am – 4 pm. It will be a day you don’t want to miss--unique arts and crafts, beautiful plants, fun family and children’s activities, book sales, tasty food, live music, a silent auction and raffles.
The Sherborn Arts & Crafts Fair, which is organized and run by the Friends of the Sherborn Library, began as an annual event 40 years ago, in 1972. Joan Dunn, Patty Petrou and Sally Willis were a few of the first organizers. Joan Dunn remembers that “there were no pop-up tents in those days, so if it was going to rain we went to Pine Hill School.” In recent years, crafters and artists have brought their own tents and are ready for all weather conditions, enabling the Fair to continue on the grounds of the Sherborn Library, Sherborn Community Center and UUAC parking lot, rain or shine. Most Sherborn residents are well aware of the rather notorious weather conditions (rain, wind and even hail) that tend to accompany past Fairs, scheduled for early May. This year, the Friends are attempting to wait out May showers and have scheduled the Fair for June 2nd. Cross your fingers for early summer sunshine!
Throughout the past 40 years, the Arts & Crafts Fair has grown into a highly anticipated event that typically draws an average of 90 to 100 local artisans and crafters, all eager to display their creations. It also provides residents with an opportunity to jump-start their gardens with a huge Plant Sale where a wide variety of annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetable plants donated from local nurseries, as well as many of Sherborn’s finest gardeners, are sold at unbeatable prices. If you are interested in donating plants to this year’s sale, please contact us at sherborncraftfair@gmail.com.
Once you’ve perused the arts and plants booths, you can stop by any of a number of community booths, which in the past have provided a great venue for local organizations and students to share information with and raise funds from neighbors and supporters.
Don’t miss the newest addition to the Fair, a silent auction that will provide participants with the opportunity to support the Library by bidding on fabulous items, ranging from beautiful artwork donated by Library art exhibitors to a 10-week CSA farm share donated by the Silverwood Organic Farm in Sherborn.
You can’t leave the Sherborn Arts & Crafts Fair without spending time in the children’s area, which is prominently marked by an enormous bouncy house that is graciously sponsored each year by the Sherborn Community Center, with the support of the Sherborn Community Center Foundation and its membership donors. In the Unitarian Universalist Area Church and Sherborn Community Center area, kids and families will find games, face-painting, cotton candy, live music and raffle prizes.
Admission is free, so please join us! Parking will be available at St. Theresa’s Church as well as at Pilgrim Church. Please put the Sherborn Arts & Crafts Fair on your calendars. The Friends of Sherborn Library can’t wait to see you on June 2nd.
