On Friday, March 22, 2013, starting at 8 a.m., the Dover Police will participate in a 24-hour Police Tweet-a-thon with police departments around the world. This event will highlight the use of social media by law enforcement and raise awareness about police work. Over 150 police departments are participating from across the U.S., including Dover's neighbors Wellesley and Norwood, and worldwide in Canada, UK, Sweden, Iceland, and Australia.
Throughout the day, tweets about police work and issues going on that day, and in general, will be posted on both the Department twitter, @dovermapd, and the Association twitter,@doverpoliceassc, with the hashtag #poltwt.
"This is a great opportunity for us to build awareness of issues officers face and promote the use of social media in the community," said Officer Rob Clouse. "We hope our residents and area businesses join in the conversation on the rapidly growing communication link between the community and the department."
The Global Police Tweet-A-Thon was organized Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications. "We are excited to bring together police agencies around the world in this first of its kind social media event," Stevens said. "We hope it sends the message to non-law enforcement that their police officers are up to speed with social media, and that they should use the channel to talk with police officers and to be stewards of public safety."
Follow both accounts and use the hashtag #poltwt (short for police tweet) to join the conversation on Friday.
Of course, every day of the week, official alerts and department messages are updated on@dovermapd, while minor incidents and upcoming community events are posted on@doverpoliceassc.
