Q&A with Sherborn's New Selectman Peter Caruso

Caruso said he is hoping to 're-earn the trust and respect in the Board of Selectmen by the residents and other stakeholders.'

Peter Caruso won an uncontested bid for Sherborn's open seat on the Board of Selectmen in the town's election Tuesday. Former Selectmen George Pucci announced in February that he would not be seeking re-election on the board. Caruso won the Town Caucus by a vote of, 94-41, over then-candidate Ed McGuire. McGuire dropped out of the race before the election. Caruso received 494 votes in this year's election. After the election D-S Patch spoke with Caruso via email regarding his new position as selectmen. D-S Patch: How does it feel to be elected selectmen in Sherborn? Caruso: "I am honored to be given the confidence of so many good folks in Town to be their next Selectman. And I am very much looking forward to being part of the crew that …

As Mr. Pollock said at Town Caucus referring to Peter and Ed McGuire, "..... we’re fortunate to have two candidates, really two fine gentlemen running for Selectmen this year." We can tell Peter is sincere, a sailor and brings valuable skills to the Board of Selectmen.   more ›

Low Turnout for Sherborn Election

Only 21% of voters cast votes in this year's election.

Sherborn saw a low voter turnout for their 2012 annual town election Tuesday. Only 614 out of 2907 voters (21%) turned out. The turnout was one of the lowest in Sherborn history according to Sherborn Town Clerk Carole Marple. The lowest, "in the last 100 years" was a 12% turnout in 2009 with 360 votes cast, according to Marple. Last year 1287 voters (44%) came to the polls. The only contested race of the election was for the Sherborn School Committee. Susan Hanlon gathered 376 votes while Greg Garland had 365 votes to take the two available seats on the board. The odd man out was Bruce Lazarus who had 175 votes. There were seven ballot questions, all of which received a 'Yes' vote with the exception of Question #4, which received 334 votes…

Elections Brown and Warren: Is It Just Politics As Usual?

It’s been an interesting week in the U.S. Senate Race between Democrat Elizabeth Warren and incumbent Republican Scott Brown.

First it was revealed that Harvard University once touted Warren’s marginal Native American heritage as proof of their faculty’s diversity. That story was followed up with another revealing one that Warren had listed herself as a minority professor between 1986 and 1995 in the Association of American Law Schools desk book, a major reference for legal professors. On Tuesday it was revealed that Brown, who ran for office vowing to kill President Obama’s health care law (and who has since voted three times to repeal it) took advantage of a key provision in it: the provision that allows him to keep his elder daughter on his congressional health insurance plan. Meanwhile, both candidates downplayed their wealth this week as they revealed their …

Jim King Drops Out of Senate Race, Endorses Warren

King dropping out leaves Marisa DeFranco as Elizabeth Warren's only Democratic opponent.

Democratic candidate and Dover resident Jim King announced Wednesday that he will be dropping out of the senate race and will endorse Elizabeth Warren, The Republican reported today. "We looked at our goals of defeating Scott Brown and rebuilding Sen. Ted Kennedy's legacy, and decided that the best way to accomplish that at this point is to support Elizabeth Warren," he told the paper. King, a corporate lawyer out of Boston, announced his candidacy late last year and is the fifth candidate to drop out of the primary. His announcement means that Warren's only opponent remaining in the Democratic field is Marisa DeFranco.

Dover Cafe on Kennedy Campaign Trail

Joseph Kennedy III stopped at the Dover Cafe for coffee Sunday morning. Kennedy is running for the 4th Congressional seat.

Charlie Arvanitis, owner of the Dover Cafe & Deli on Center Street, does not really follow politics but politics followed him on Sunday when Joseph Kennedy III stopped in for a cup of Joe. "He seems like a nice man, a down-to-earth guy," said Arvanitis as voters gathered outside the cafe to shake hands with Kennedy. "I wish him the best of luck, you never know what can happen; everybody needs a change." Kennedy said having coffee with constituents is one of the best perks of campaigning. "The best part about running for office is that you can walk into a cafe like this and sit down and ask people what's going on in their lives and they'll tell you and that part is actually a privilege that I take very seriously.” Catherine White, who …
