Homes, Hounds and Horses Coming Dover: Old Homes Day is Back

If you haven't got any plans for Sunday, Oct. 6, the Dover Historical Society is throwing a party and they'd like you to come. 

Dover Historical Society is once again gearing up for their annual Old Home Day. This year it is Sunday, Oct. 6, and will feature many old favorites from the past events. 

The tradition first started more than 110 years ago, in 1903, according to a press release from the Dover Historical Society, and disappeared for a time. The Historical Society revived it in 2002. Last year's event marked the 10th anniversary.

The event starts at noon, marked by the ringing of the bells at the Dover Church. 

The Old-Fashioned Grange Supper is coming back, and is again catered by Blue Ribbon BarBQ, which is owned by Dover native Geoff Janowski. The meal will feature hand-carved ham and turkey with bean supper. Food will run $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and children. Below is the day's full schedule.

• Noon: Antique Auto Show & Parade (parade starts at 2 p.m.) - Militia Field across from Library Hounds and horses from the Norfolk Hunt Club arrive after 1:45 p.m. to lead the parade.
• From 12:30 to 2 :30 p.m.: Lunch on Town Green – with Captain Marden’s Cod Squad
• Noon to 4 p.m.: Sawin Museum – 80 Dedham Street an exhibit highlighting the Society’s collection of Quilts and Samplers. McGregor McGehee will provide musical entertainment. The café will be open selling historic cakes and other goodies
• Noon to 4 p.m.: Caryl House and Fisher Barn (107 Dedham Street) Demonstration of spinning and weaving on the newly restored Caryl House loom with Barbara Provest, and a Knitting demo by Janet Comiskey-Giannini.
• 2:30 p.m.: Getting to the Core of the Matter: Dendrochronology presentation by Architectural Historian Anne Grady at the Caryl House. 
• Checkers Champion: Come match wits with past state champion Richard White.
• 1:45 to 2 p.m.: Norfolk Hunt Club Hounds and horses from the arrive to lead the parade
• 4:15 p.m.: - Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags. If you have an old, tattered flag, you can bring it to the American Legion Hall for proper, ceremonial disposal.
• Starting at 5:30 p.m.: the Old Fashioned Grange Supper at American Legion, 32 Dedham Street.
