Couple Who Works Together, Stays Together

Kierce and Company offers it's customers the best of both worlds in Sherborn, while also paying close attention to the needs of their customers.

Kierce and Company Hair and Barber Studio is a one-stop shop: an old fashioned barbershop and a modern hair salon.

Owners Lauren and Tom Kierce are married and offer their customers a unique experience. A husband can go in for a hot lather shave and a haircut to the left, and his wife can step to the right and get her nails done or her hair colored.

A walk through the barbershop reveals dark, cherry colored, antique-looking vanities and chairs, with some old sports memorabilia decorating the walls. The salon in the next room is bright and modern, with black and silver chairs for customers to sit in while the hairdressers work.

Lauren and Tom are the glue that holds these two different hair styling worlds together. Lauren said she is lucky that she can trust her business partner 100 percent. Her best friend since third grade also works alongside her.

“It’s kind of funny, because Tom and I don’t even really see each other during the day. He’s working on customers in one room, and I’m in the salon over here. If we have some down time around here, we obviously see each other, but we’re both busy in our own places,” she said.

Lauren said both her and her husband are constantly going to classes to keep up to date on the latest trends. She also uses a specific Italian color line that stays in her clients’ hair longer and doesn’t have the high ammonia levels.

Lauren always knew she wanted to be involved in hairdressing since she began sweeping up hair in a salon when she was younger.

“It doesn’t feel like a job. It’s fun for me. Our clients are like family,” she said. Tom was in construction for 10 years, but once the economy took a downturn, so did the construction business.

“I started helping her and I went back to school to get my license,” Tom said. “It’s a nice change of pace. We enjoy the people who come in. I really enjoy doing it.”

“The people of Sherborn are fantastic with supporting local business,” Tom said. “We wouldn’t be anywhere without them.”

To support the local community who supports them, the owners of Kierce and Company donate money to the Grid Iron Club to support the Dover-Sherborn football team, and they also offer a discounted haircut for active military, police and EMTs, which is known as “The Hero’s Cut.”

Lauren also said she paid attention to the needs of the town of Sherborn when she moved the business here from Framingham.

“I did a lot of research about well-water and certain lines of products. The mineral deposits in the water in Sherborn actually turned some of the clients’ hair green,” she said. After choosing a special line of hair products from Hawaii, Lauren said she saw a vast difference in her customers’ hair.

“I had to do the research to make sure we did it right,” she said. Tom noted some customers come as far as New Hampshire and one even so far as California to their studio.
