Conservation Coalition Plans Walk of Barber Reservation

The walk is a follow-up of the public forum held last week about forestry stewardship planning in Sherborn.

Last week nearly 50 people attended a public forum on forestry stewardship planning in Sherborn.

The discussion focused on forest management options ranging from a hands-off approach, diversifying the forest age, invasive species - including a lesson on a recent attack of garlic mustard - revenue potential and logging practices.

Now the Upper Charles Conservation Land Trust, Sherborn Conservation Commission, Sherborn Rural Land Foundation and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation are sponsoring a walk of Barber, Humphrey and Hidden Meadow Conservation Land Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Barber Reservation (parking across on Stevens Lane) at 9:00 a.m.

Those who would like to attend are asked to dress in long pants with a long sleeve shirt, and to bring bug spray and a water bottle.

Professional Forester Phil Benjamin will lead the walk and discuss his forest survey including an inventory of the trees, invasive species, open space and general ecology of the properties to conserve, improve and manage them.

During the walk there will be a discussion about opportunities that exist in select areas to promote a more natural mixture of trees, protection of meadow habitat and revenue from logging to help pay for upkeep.

The rain date will be May 19 at 9:00am.
