Dover Police Chief Says Town Hit Hard by Irene

Power outages affect town as police estimated 50-percent of the homes without power.

Dover Police Chief Peter A. McGowan is reporting that the town has been hit hard by Hurricane Irene Sunday.

"Dover Highway, Dover Fire, and Dover PD have all been working hard to respond to well over 100 calls reporting power outages, tree limbs and trees down, wires down, and related calls," said McGowan via email. "There has been at least two houses struck by falling trees and limbs, and many road closures due to trees blocking the street. We have been fortunate that no injuries have been reported as of this time.

"NSTAR has been advised regarding the numerous power lines taken down. Dover PD estimates approximately 50-percent of the town is without power.

"Residents are again cautioned to avoid ANY wires down, as the danger of electrocution is high."
