First Annual Pags Memorial Classic Kicks Off Oct. 7

The memorial is to commemorate the life of Alexander Paganelli, a Dover resident, who passed away last year and to raise a scholarship in his name.

The first annual Pags Memorial Classic will be held on Oct. 7 and 8 in honor of Alexander Paganelli. The memorial will benefit the scholarship fund his family established in the spring to aid Dover-Sherborn students who are both exemplary athletes and have shown an interest in the arts.

Alexander Paganelli, who grew up in Dover, passed away after suffering injuries in a car accident on Dec. 16, 2010. “Our extended family started putting together this idea in February,” said Siobahn Paganelli, Alex’s sister.

Siobhan said the scholarship is partnered with the Dover-Sherborn Friends of the Performing Arts.

The Friends, “agreed to shelter our scholarship fund.” She said, “It’s its own entity and all the money raised for the Pags Classic will go specifically to Alex’s fund.”

“The goal is to fund academic scholarships on a merit basis,” Siobahn said. “The criteria are leadership in athletics and a passion for both athletics and art.”

She said her brother Alex was known for being an athlete. He was a lacrosse captain and played golf until his graduation from Dover-Sherborn High School in 2008. After graduation he continued on to play lacrosse at Hamilton College.

“We just wanted to say that we are grateful to be able to honor Alex’s legacy through giving out these scholarships and we’re grateful to the Dover-Sherborn community for all their support,” said Siobahn.

The memorial will include a golf tournament held Friday and costs $150 for someone to sign up. A lacrosse tournament on Saturday is free to those who would like to play. Saturday evening there will be a benefit at Elm Bank.

“We’re anticipating 250 [people],” said Siobhan, noting that the dinner is $100 a plate.

A local band the Barn Dogs will be playing at the dinner and there will be a silent auction with items donated from several local businesses as well as donations from the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Boston Celtics.

Stew Brown, an organizer and 16 year friend of the family said, “We already gave out two scholarships in June.”

A family member was able to provide seed money for the fund and they awarded two $2,500 scholarships.

Brown awarded the scholarships on the family’s behalf.

Brown, a Sherborn resident, said he and Alex’s father Paul coached their children together on youth lacrosse teams and their families vacationed together.

“He was one of those kids that acted older than he was,” Brown said of Alex.

“He connected with you right away. He was a lot of fun,” said Brown.
