Five Fun Ways To Celebrate Father’s Day

Happy Father's Day dads!

Father’s Day is today and if you’re like me, you usually go down to the wire. If you haven't already, what will you get for the one of your favorite guys?

If you’re children are old enough, try a brainstorming session. What should we get dad? What does he enjoy? My kids have thought up some great ideas in years past although I think my 8-year-old may be doing one of those ‘this gift would be great for ME and dad’ since it involves a trip to Game Stop.

Make a ‘day in the life of dad’ video: With iPhones and flip cams, it’s easier than ever to produce your own video. Write down all the things dad does around the house or at work, dress up the kids and have them do their best impression. My favorite clip was when my son tried shaving just like his dad. It made for a great keepsake.

Build Dad’s library: Hallmark has an adorable ‘Conversations to Keep’ book series where you can record your children reading a book to dad.  What if they don’t know how to read yet? I figured out a solution: You say the line and have them repeat you. (Record only the repeated part.) There are lots of other daddy books out there too – a quick search and your local book store may start a super collection for kids and dads to read together.

Get crafty:  My husband loves to make dinner on the grill so we bought a plain, white apron at the craft store and I let the kids go nuts decorating it. Kids could also make a ‘Portrait of Dad.” Use a paper plate and have the kids create dad’s face. On the back, ask some questions about dad for them to answer such as, “How old is dad?” “How does he make you laugh?” “Do you think dad got in trouble when he was a kid?”

Treat him like a king: I found an awesome way to honor dad with a make-it-yourself throne at Disney Family Fun magazine.  Dress up a lawn chair: Tie a back-scratcher to the pole of an umbrella and clamp that to the head of the chair (shade for dad), place a bowl of dad’s favorite snacks on a table next to the chair, and make a paper construction crown for the king of the castle.

Plan a fun day: The Boston Harbor Islands is offering free rides on on Sunday, June 19 beginning at 10 a.m.  Check out George’s Island or Spectacle Island for some sun and exploration. Bring along a frisbee, your fishing rod, binoculars or a picnic lunch for some outdoor fun with dad.

Take a ride back in history with a guided-tour through sites that honor Civil War soldiers on Saturday, June 18. The Concord Museum and Concord Bike Tours have teamed up to offer a guided ride through Concord’s Civil War history.  Tour includes Concord Bike Tours comfort bike and helmet, snack & guide.
