'Once Upon a Mattress', storytime, winter carnivals, and local artists.

The weekend is just around the corner and the only plans you have are not to stay at home because lounging on the couch watching TV just isn't cutting it anymore. Don't worry, Patch is here to assist you in making your weekend plans by providing you with our picks for fun activities to enjoy within driving distance of Dover and Sherborn. 

1. 

Where/When:  , 88r South St., Medfield; Friday, Saturday, 7 p.m.; Sunday, 2 p.m.

Why Go: The Medfield High School Theater Society presents Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Once Upon a Mattress." Based on the story "The Princess and the Pea," by Hans Christian Andersen, this spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship features such characters as a moat swimming princess, a hypochondriac queen, a champion charade-playing king, a tap-dancing jester, a game-show host wizard, men in tights, a knight in shining armor and of course a lady-in-waiting . 
This retelling of this comical musical is just as much fun for adults as it is for kids.

Where/When: 82 Providence Hwy., East Walpole; Friday, March 11, 10:30 a.m.

Why Go: Friday's Storytime  is "Bill and Pete." This funny tale by Tomie dePaola is about Bill, a crocodile, and his best bird friend, Pete. Together they foil a crocodile-hunting bad guy, making life safer along the River Nile in this funny tale of two memorable friends.
Pricing: Free.

 Where/When: Memorial School, 59 Adams St., Medfield; Saturday, March 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Why Go: The Memorial & Wheelock School's CSA invites you to its fifth Annual and largest FUNdraising event.

The Winter Carnival is a fun-filled day of games, activities, raffles, food, sweets and treats and a silent auction. 

This year's Carnival will feature up to 30 booths that include:

Amusement Rentals: Moonwalk, Inflatable Slide and Obstacle Course

Tumble Bus

Sand Art

Basketball Shoot

Wheel of Fortune

And many more fun activities that the whole family can partake in.

This carnival is a major fundraiser of the CSA and money raised will help fund their enrichment programs such as the performing arts, technology and science classes.

Where/When: The Art Emporium, 32 Chestnut St., Needham; Weekly on Saturdays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Why Go: Local artist, Tatiana Roulin of Sharon will be having her personal show at The Art Emporium Gallery in Needham throughout the month of March.
The exhibition will consist of three themes: Landscapes, Still Lifes and Portraits. All artworks were created within the past two  years in pastel and acrylic. A number of the artworks shown in the exhibition were awarded prizes in both domestic and international art competitions. More information about the artist you can find at Tatiana's website.

Where/When:, 45 Vanderbilt Ave, Norwood; Sunday, March 13, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Come view swim lessons, meet  veteran staff of instructors and get a free evaluation. All instructors are WSI certified and we provide a 4:1 student/teacher ratio at all levels. The Spring Session runs from March 21-May 22 and runs once a week for 30 minutes. Registration is ongoing. Please RSVP to Michael Mowatt, Aquatics Director at MMowatt@aol.com.
