Grab & Go Kids Planner: Did Someone Say Spring?

Thankfully, spring is right around the corner!

There may still be snow on the ground but temps are continuing to rise in the region. Here are some ways to welcome spring:

  • Flowers will be bloomin’ all over Needham this weekend as The Beth Shalom Garden Club celebrates Needham’s Art in Bloom 2011, a free multi-generational community showcase event at multiple locations in town.  It will feature mixed media artwork created by  Needham High School students. Each piece of art will have an accompanying floral interpretation produced by members of the award winning Beth Shalom Garden Club. You can get a taste of this exhibit Friday, March 4, at the Senior Center and in the Needham High School lobby from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The entire exhibit will be featured throughout the Needham Public Library on Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6,  during regular hours.
  • The VFW hall in Walpole is hosting a Spring Craft show on Saturday, March 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  at 108 Robbins Road in Walpole. Local crafters will be showcasing spring crafts perfect for Easter and/or Mother’s Day. You could grab lunch at the adjoining pub room. And you can feel good about any purchases because the event is being sponsored to help a King Philip senior with college expenses. Adults can enjoy the show for $1, kids are free.
  • See maple sugaring as it was done in early 19th-century rural New England in Old Sturbridge Village’s working sugar camp. See the process - from the tapping of the trees though "sugaring off." Maple Days & Maple Sugaring Weekends are available Saturdays and Sundays this month from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Kids are only $7, adults admission is $18.
  • Boating season is around the corner and you can see the region’s largest selection of the newest boats, gears, and gadgets at the 2011 New England Boat Show on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  (415 Summer Street, Boston). Admission for adults is $14 but kids 15, under are free. They’ll likely love the remote control sailing pond. Everyone gets a chance to race against their closest worthy opponent.  SpongeBob SquarePant's neighbor and best friend "Patrick" will come out from under his rock in Bikini Bottom to make a special appearance at the show on Saturday, March 5 from noon to 4:00 p.m. Don't forget to bring your camera!
  • Friday night at 7:00 p.m., the Red Sox will face the Yankees at a spring training game. You can get fired up with a tour of Fenway Park available daily until the end of the month.  Visit the park between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and see where the Babe pitched, The Kid hit, Yaz dazzled, and today's stars still thrill Red Sox Nation. Fenway Park Tours provide a 50-minute historic walking tour of the ballpark, guided by an official Fenway Park Tour Guide. Adults $12, children ages 3 -15 $10.
