Grab & Go Kids Planner: Get moving

A great way for you to plan ahead for your weekend with fun activities just around the corner for you and the kids!

After months of cold and snow and being stuck indoors, aren’t you ready get up and get going? Here are some perfect picks to get moving:

  • For those who love to know how things go, check out the 15th annual Model Engineering Show being held at the Charles River Museum of Industry (154 Moody St, Waltham) on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The event exhibits gasoline engines, aircraft engines, locomotives, clocks, model boats, and various contraptions of their own design. Several exhibits feature hands-on experiments. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and students. Children under 6-years-old are free.
  • An outdoor activity that could provide some giggles especially if you’re one of those who have to grip the rail for dear life, Patriot Place continues its outdoor winter skate.  The 60-by-140-foot, refrigerated ice surface is designed specifically for recreational skating, and features an observation deck for non-skaters.  Rent a pair of skates for $4. Admission for adults is $7 and children 12 and under are $5. After skating, present your Winter Skate wristband to receive an exclusive discount at CBS Scene, The Hall, the Patriots ProShop, Trophy Town, Espionage, Reebok and Eastern Mountain Sports.  The rink is open this weekend from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • 2011 is the year of the Rabbit and the 56th Anniversary of the Hong Kong in Harvard Square. Celebrate the Chinese New Year on Sunday, Feb. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 1236 Mass. Avenue in Cambridge.  Meet for the Lion Dance around the lantern-bedecked oak tree and watch the parade at 1:30 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m., several generations of the Lee Family will welcome the public to “Kong” for a special cultural open house.
  • For only $5 per person, you and the kids can explore the 48-acre grounds of the beautiful Gore Place in Waltham on a pair of snowshoes. This is a walk with a purpose (which always helpful  with kids). Grab a backpack for an additional $5 and go on a scavenger hunt for certain trees and other landmarks. A snowman challenge offers some picture ops.  Parking is free and there’s also complimentary hot cocoa for all visitors. Just ring the bell at the Mansion to get your backpack or snowshoes. Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from  noon to 3 p.m.
  • If you prefer to stay indoors, kids love the spooky backdrop to a round of mini golf offered at Monster Mini Golf in Norwood. This is an indoor monster-themed glow in the dark 18-hole miniature golf course. Little monsters can play a round of golf for $ 6.50 and Big Monsters (that’s you) pay $7.50. Extended hours will be offered during vacation week. The site also has weekly specials that could save you some money.
