Preparing For Hurricane Irene

A hurricane watch has been issued by the National Weather Service Friday morning for Natucket, Dukes, Plymouth, Suffolk, Barnstable, Bristol, Essex and Norfolk Counties.

Hurricane Irene, a major Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 mph as of Friday morning, is taking a path toward southern New England, the National Weather Service is predicting.

The NWS says Irene's track remains uncertain, but the possibility of heavy rain (5 to 10 inches), flooding and strong, damaging wind exists for the weekend for the Dover-Sherborn area.

The last hurricane to make landfall in New England was Hurricane Bob on August 19, 1991. According to the Executive Office of Safety and Security, Hurricane Bob touched down in New England near New Bedford, Massachusetts with 115 mph winds, cutting a path across Southeastern Massachusetts. Over 60% of the residents of Southeastern Massachusetts and Southeastern Rhode Island lost power.
