The Great Escape: 44 Scotland Street

The summer season is heralded by Memorial Day weekend, and honing in on your own favorite authors and writing styles will provide you with hours of interruptable but enjoyable reading bliss!

This week, I have a great suggestion for a long-lasting “Me Time” escape….dive into a new book series at the Dover Public Library.

I have recently devoured a series of funny, poignant and sustaining novels from Alexander McCall Smith entitled “The 44 Scotland Street Series.”

These books were absolutely made for stay-at-home/work-at-home moms like myself.

It is not often that I can devout hours to reading a book.  Not a problem with the 44 Scotland Series, as each novel  revolves around 6 or so quirky characters who are the focus of a chapter each in succession. Some chapters are about 2 pages long, and surely we all have time for that!

What I dearly love about McCall Smith’s series is the growth of the characters over a several-year span, over the course of 5 easy to devour books. The only thing in common the characters have is that they share an apartment complex, called a flat, in Edinborough. As their lives haplessly intertwine, it is comical to view the goings-on of this quirky row from the point of view of McCall Smith’s award-winning and humorous  narrative.

This week, I recommend starting your own love-affair with a book series such as 44 Scotland Street, as there is no more solitary and satisfying personal escape as that of comic and quaint fiction.

Your best bet is to start with the Dover Town Library’s online catalog, so you may order several of the series in conjunction with each other. I guarantee you that you will not want to put them down, but when you do, you will find them easy to pick up again!
