Memorial Day celebrations, tornado warnings, and D-S graduation.

For people who think that small-town, hyperlocal journalism isn't necessary, this week in Dover and Sherborn is the reason why Patch exists.

On Monday, Dover and Sherborn each had their Memorial Day celebrations complete with parades and dedications honoring our veterans who have kept our country safe.

118 diplomas were awarded at the Dover-Sherborn High School 2011 Graduation ceremony on windy Frothingham Field at the High School, Thursday night, in front of hundreds of proud parents, family members, friends, and supporters. After the students were called up one-by-one to receive their diplomas, the graduating class threw their caps up in the air to an uproarious applause from all those in attendance, with many hugs and pats on the back to follow.

On Wednesday, most of the state was glued to the television after the National Weather Service issued severe weather warnings for the tornados that devastated parts of central Massachusetts. Although hail and heavy thunder and lightning storms were reported in Dover and Sherborn, thankfully our region remained relatively unscathed.

With their May 31 deadline coming and going the Peace Abbey in Sherborn has yet the raise the . But having already raised enough money to pay off the mortgage of the Life Experience School in Millis, which owns the Peace Abbey, the people at the Abbey are remaining hopeful that they will be able to stave off foreclosure on the remaining portion of their debt.

It's playoff time for the D-S spring sports teams. The regular seasons ended with several Raider athletes being honored as the tops in their respective sports. Eight D-S athletes were named to the Tri-Valley League All-Star Team for track and field. D-S boys tennis star Christian Baker was named Boy's Tennis Player of the year of the Tri-Valley League. D-S boys varsity lacrosse captains Jeff Williams and Billy Polk have recently been named All-Americans by US Lacrosse. Williams and Polk led the Raiders to a #1 seed in the 2011 MIAA Boys Lacrosse East Division 3. After a first round bye the Raiders boys varsity lacrosse team started off their postseason campaign with a decisive, 16-6, win over Medway, Friday night.
