Should Governor's Council Nominees be Prepared for the Job they are Applying For?

Should nominees that appear before the Governor’s Council be prepared for the job they are applying?

Imagine if you had a job interview tomorrow.

If you were unfamiliar with some of the responsibilities required, would you research them so you were better prepared?

Most people that I know would research anything that they are unfamiliar with when preparing for a job interview.

Not so when the interviewer is the Governor’s Council and the job is a lifetime appointment.

Over the past couple of weeks the Governor’s Council has interviewed several appointments to the Superior Court.

The Superior Court handles both criminal and civil matters.  The Superior Court conducts trials.  The recent nominees have had little experience in either criminal or civil matters, and some of them had little trial experience.

Yet the most common reply to their lack of experience was a promise to learn the skills, if approved for the office.

Imagine if this were your job interview, you lack experience and you openly acknowledge that you have made no attempt to educate yourself. What would you think your chances are of getting the job?

If you were in front of the Governor’s Council, your chances are pretty good.

Although the Governor’s Council does ask the question regarding the nominee’s experience, they seem unconcerned when nominees make no effort to educate themselves before their hearing

If members of the Governor’s Council would simply point out to these nominees that they need to familiarize themselves with these issues by reviewing cases, reading journals, and reviewing procedures, then the nominees would probably do it.  As it the bar is set far too low for these lifetime appointments.

You and I couldn’t get away with it why should they.

I would make clear to each and every nominee that if they lack experience in a key area, then they must make an attempt to educate themselves before their hearing.
