September is still several weeks away, but Dover Police Chief Peter McGowan is already taking steps to get ready for the annual Jimmy Fund Walk on Sunday, Sept. 9.
McGowan will join more than 8,500 others for the 24th annual event, through which walkers aim to raise money to support patient care and cancer research for adults and children at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
This year will mark the ninth consecutive walk for McGown, who is a member of Team Police Chiefs. The team is helping to support the official charity o the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association. To donate, visit JimmyFundWalk.org/2012/DoverChief.
Meanwhile, Dover Mobil Station is currently collecting donations through a canister on the front counter, McGowan said.
Walkers may choose to walk one of four routes: the entire 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston, the 13.1-mile route from Babson to Boston, the 5-mile route from Boston College, or the 3-mile route with patients and their families starting at the main Dana-Farber campus.
Walkers are treated to a celebration at the finish line at Copley Square in Boston, complete with food and music. Walkers begin in Hopkinton between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., at Babson College between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., at Boston College between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and at Dana-Farber at 1:30 p.m.
