Police Investigating Recent String Of Area House And Vehicle Break-Ins

Several houses and vehicles have been broken into in Sherborn and the surrounding towns in the past 2-3 weeks.

Within the past few weeks Sherborn Police and officers from surrounding towns have been investigating a string of house and vehicle break-ins in the area.

According to the Sherborn Police log on Wednesday Aug. 10, there were reports of at least eight vehicles that were broken into the night before, including one vehicle that had been stolen and has since been recovered.

“We had multiple motor vehicle breaks and we had multiple house breaks. What happened was, we had a few vehicles in the area of Coolidge Street and Meadowbrook [Road] that were broken into. One of the vehicles there was stolen and recovered in Framingham,” Sherborn Police Officer Ben Stickney said.

“The vehicle that was stolen, they had recovered some items from some of the Sherborn house breaks. They’re currently investigating to see whether that group that had taken the vehicle was also responsible for some of the house breaks in the Sherborn area,” said Stickney.

The stolen vehicle was a silver sedan and had been reported in the area of other break-ins before being recovered. "It may have been that they had taken the vehicle and had used it to facilitate some of their other vehicle breaks in the area and then dumped it in Framingham,” Stickney said.

The vehicle was recovered two days after it was reported stolen and after authorities searched through the vehicle it was returned to its owner.

According to the Sherborn Police there have been other break-ins in the surrounding towns of Medway, Natick and Framingham. Mostly on the outskirts. No arrests have been made but police from the different towns are working together.

The vehicle break-ins were all relatively easy targets for the thieves, according to Stickney.

“Mostly they were targeting unlocked cars and what they would do is just go through the cars and whatever was in there they would take, change from the change cup, GPS’s, computers, whatever people had left in their vehicles,” he said.

“They weren’t smashing the windows or trying to gain access that way, but if they came across a vehicle that was unlocked they’d get into it,” he said.

Stickney, who also serves as the Crime Prevention Officer for the town of Sherborn gave these tips for residents who would like to avoid being the victim of such break-ins:

  • Keep your house doors and windows locked, especially at night.
  • Make sure your vehicle is secured and locked. If it has an alarm, set the alarm.
  • Don't leave any valuables in plain sight. If you can, take them out of your vehicle. This goes especially for high end electronics.
  • Take your GPS off of your windows/windshield when not in use.
  • Keep front and driveway lights on at your house at night to deter anyone from gaining access to your property.
  • Be sure to set any house alarms at night or when you are out of the house.
  • If you have bushes or shrubbery in front of your windows, keep them trimmed. If a thief thinks you can see them they may think twice about making your home and vehicle a target.
  • If you’re going away for an extended period of time drop off or submit a house check form to the police department so they can check the house while you are away.
