Sherborn Fire Department Uses 'Jaws of Life' to Free Horse

Extent of a horse's injury unknown after Sherborn Fire Department pried its hoof from a fence Monday morning.

A horse at 127 Farm Rd. in Sherborn was injured after its hoof got stuck in a stall on the property Monday morning, according to Sherborn Fire Department.

The incident required Sherborn Fire to use the Jaws of Life to free the horse, according to Sherborn Fire Chief John Dowse.

“The horse was lying on the ground with its hoof jammed into these [metal] bars [of the stall] pretty good,” Dowse said. “We brought up an engine to use the Jaws of Life to free the horse. Once the engine got on scene it took us less than 30 seconds to bend the bars [and free the horse]. We were probably there 15-20 minutes.”

Dowse said he had not heard the extent of the horse’s injury from the veterinarian on scene, but it did not appear to be significant.

“The condition of the horse was questionable,” Dowse said. “It was back up on its feet but it wasn’t putting any weight on the rear of the foot so I don’t know the extent of the injury to the horse. I didn’t see any obvious broken bones or anything like that, but I couldn’t tell if there were any sprains or anything else like that.”

Dowse said Sherborn Fire received the call “a little before” 8:50 a.m. Monday and upon arrival he requested rescue.

“I came across a horse that was in a stall,” Dowse said. “The stall had wooden sides up approximately four feet up, maybe a little more and metal bars around the top of it. The horse somehow managed to get its hoof in between the two metal bars.”
