Dover Selectmen Discuss Snow Removal Budget, Town's 175th Anniversary

The board added $100,000 to the snow removal budget and discussed celebrating Dover's 175th Anniversary.

The Dover Board of Selectmen voted to add $100,000 to the snow and ice removal budget for the Department of Public Works, on Thursday.

Dave Ramsey, Dover Town Administrator, stated that the DPW has already spent $250,000. They tapped into their reserves and went over budget by $25,000. He also said that the department owes $49,000 in payroll.

It also came to the attention of the selectmen that 2011 is the town’s 175th anniversary. Resident Heather Hodgeton, said it recently came to her attention and thought the town should not miss the opportunity to celebrate its birthday.

She thought it could be celebrated in conjunction with the town’s yearly civic pride celebration “Old Home Day.”

“We already have a day of celebration,” said Hodgeton, adding, “I’d hate to see the town miss this opportunity.”

Selectman Carol Lisbon said, “I think it’s a great idea,” and suggested that something be put on the town website.

The selectmen then voted to have a committee put together to coordinate the activities.

Selectmen chair Joe Melican stated that he remembered the 150th Anniversary and it was a big celebration for the community, with a parade, town picnic, and residents singing.

Also at the meeting was resident Roger Patrick of Dedham St.

He asked for an answer from the board regarding a matter he said he and his wife brought to their attention in September of 2009.

He stated that in front of his house is a speed bump, that causes stress and aggravation to him and his neighbors.

Patrick said he was upset that the Parks and Recreation Department removed the article from this year’s warrant regarding the speed bump because it would be the near the new entrance to Caryl Park once it is redone.

Lisbon informed him that the project was put off for another year.

Patrick wanted to find out other options they had for getting funding to remove the bump.

Melican stated the selectmen had not made a decision yet and that they would get back to him before the spring.
