More Personnel, But No Direct Threat At Logan Airport

Dover and Sherborn residents looking to travel this week shouldn't be met with any additional difficulties, according officials at Logan International Airport.

After a security meeting this morning, officials have not raised the threat level at the facility, but there are additional State Police and TSA personnel on as a precaution.

“We met with all the airlines and said to be aware,” said Phil Orlandella spokesman for Massport. “There is no threat to Logan.”

Officials met earlier this morning to discuss whether to take additional security measures in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death.  Orlandella said the federal government has not issued any order for additional security or said the airport is under any threat.

Orlandella stressed that while there was no threat, all travelers should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Anyone who sees something they believe is unusual should report it to an airport official or state police officer.

Logan is where American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 departed from before crashing into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001. A Dover resident, Sonia Mercedes Morales Puopolo was on American Airlines Flight 11. 

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department has issued a worldwide travel alert, cautioning Americans abroad to take precautions against the potential for retaliation against U.S. nationals living and travelling abroad.

“Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations,” read the alert. “U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.”
