Rogers High School Principal James Nelson made a case for considering alternative modified block schedules during Tuesday night's school committee meeting, stating that classes should meet more frequently.
The current modified block rotates on a three-day schedule with 69 minutes of instructional time per class per day. Students have seven classes and attend five each day.
“The problem with the current schedule is that you have the kids two out of three days,” Nelson said. “It’s important to see the kids as often as you can.”
A local credit requirement offers little leeway for administrators to change class schedules, he added.
“We’re a little bit handcuffed, we have to go seven periods [because of the requirement],” he said.
The school department is looking into several schedule options to increase student-teacher contact time, expand enrollment and reduce county student conflicts with the NACTC programs, and reduce the impact of truancy on 0.5 credit courses.
If classes met every day in a seven-day rotation, instructional time would be reduced to 48 minutes, which is not sufficient for lab sciences, Nelson explained.
Another possible six-period cycle would offer a double period once a week for lab classes.
Nelson added that semesterizing classes would also open up elective options for students. Now, half credit classes only meet once every three days.
School Committee member Rebecca Bolan said she was more in favor of teachers seeing students more often for shorter periods of time.
