Boys Lacrosse Wins By Double Digits Over Ashland

The Raiders beat Ashland 17-6 on Tuesday.

Coming off of a tough overtime win on Monday over defending state champion Cohasset, the D-S boys varsity lacrosse team came out looking tired in their game against Ashland on Tuesday.

Ashland scored first and the two teams traded goals and were knotted up 3-3 with a little over three minutes to go in the first quarter.

"We came out a little sluggish after the big win yesterday,” said D-S head coach Brian McLaughlin.

After that, the Raiders seemed to catch their second wind, scoring four unanswered goals to close out the remainder of the first quarter with a 7-3 lead.

D-S won the game in dominating fashion with a final score of 17-6.

“We were probably a little tired coming out, but we rallied after few minutes and played a little better," McLaughlin said. “We started making some nice passes and put some shots on net and we didn’t make as many of the mistakes as we were making early on.”

The Raiders would spend much of the rest of the game on the offensive. Dishing off passes to one another and relentlessly attacking the net.

“They did a real nice job possessing the ball on offense. They worked the ball around and they gave us a good look at what it’s supposed to look like,” said Ashland head coach Ken Gates. “We just didn’t have enough touches on the ball, if you don’t have the ball you can’t win.”

“It’s nice to see when we can move the ball around and possess it and their defense gets tired and you can pass the ball a little better,” McLaughlin said. "Overall it was a pretty good game."

P.J. Copponi led the way for D-S scoring three goals and dishing out one assist.

Jared Spence, Ben Newbert, Chad Huemme, Brandon Jaeger, and Russell Mallett all chipped in two goals apiece.

“Ben Newbert was playing well, Jared Spence was moving the ball well, the Huemme boys were doing a nice job. There was a lot of guys contributing today,” McLaughlin said.

The Raiders are now 4-0 on season and will be back in action on Thursday at Westwood High School.

Ashland dropped their record to 0-3 on the season.
