D-S Baseball Falls In Second Game Of Season To Medfield

With the score tied 1-1 after two innings Dover-Sherborn and Medfield were both waiting for their offenses to come to life. In the third they did just that, with Medfield putting up five runs with a string of walks and singles and the Raiders following suit, tying the game 6-6 with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.

It was Medfield who kept scoring, however, and Warriors pitcher Corey Chung who shut down the Dover-Sherborn offense for the remainder of the game.

D-S lost 10-6 and Medfield's disciplined hitters got deep into counts and worked walks to keep the Raiders pitchers on the ropes.

“It was walks and little inconsistencies with the pitching,” said D-S head coach Steve Ryan. “I’m not sure how many walks we had, I stopped counting after 11.”

“Even when we weren’t walking people we were going deep into counts," Ryan said.

Medfield head coach Matt Marenghi said his hitters' patience was key to them getting on base against a Raider team that was hanging tough after being down by five runs.

“We are very disciplined hitters, I would say. We put a huge focus on hitting and for each kid, they knowing how to critique their own at-bats and they take them personally,” Marenghi said. “Them being patient up there is know that they really take every opportunity to get better when they’re in the box.”

Chung came in at the bottom of the third inning and ensured the Warriors did not relinquish their lead.

“Our big question mark this year is who’s going to follow our ace Mike Keleher,” Marenghi said. “I’m hoping that a lot of that can be answered today. He can be that dominant if he can get more consistent and more confident and today I see that as a way of soft of building on his confidence.”

For the Raiders, Coach Ryan said they're still hoping someone will take the reigns as the number two starter.

“We’re still looking for someone to step up. We’re waiting for someone to really step up and say ‘Hey I’m going to be the number two starter,’” Ryan said. “We’ve got some kids who throw hard so I’ll think we’ll get it.”

Despite the loss Ryan said that he was happy with how they responded to being down 6-1 in the third inning. 

“I was really happy with that,” he said.

The Raiders are now 1-1 on the season will play their next game in Bellingham on Wednesday.

Medfield is 2-0 so far in the young season and play Medway on Wednesday.
