D-S Falls In State Final To Weston In Low Scoring Game

Weston's Joey Pasquale dominated the game scoring four goals and assisting on the Wildcat's fifth goal.

The D-S boys lacrosse team lost in the Div. 3 East State Final game, 5-4, to Weston Tuesday at Harvard Stadium in Boston in their lowest scoring game of the season.

Weston's goalie Jared Fong stoned the Raiders throughout most of the game and Joey Pasquale befuddled Dover-Sherborn's defense scoring four goals and adding an assist in the game.

The Raiders spent much of the match trying to figure out ways to score against Wong and Weston's lockdown defense.

“I think we came down and had a couple good shots and didn’t finish them,” said D-S head coach Brian McLaughlin. “I thought we had some good opportunities in the first half and just didn’t capitalize on them.”

The Raiders played from behind almost the entire game with Pasquale scoring in the first 15 seconds of the first quarter.

“We just didn’t do a good job on him. He’s a great shooter and we knew that and we shut him off a little bit but he made his shots count when he did," McLaughlin said.

Weston head coach Jim Wilcon said of Pasquale, “I’m glad we don’t have to defend against him because I don’t know how to stop him. He’s done a tremendous job with the ball and off the ball.”

The win for Weston was their first lacrosse state title in school history.

“It was important just because we believed in ourselves. We believed we were good enough to be here and good enough to win the game,” said Wilcon. "Dover-Sherborn, taking nothing away from them, they’re a phenomenal program. We knew it was going to take our best effort to beat them.”

McLaughlin said that despite not ending the year with the win they still had a successful season and was proud of his players.

“I think it’ll take a little bit to look back and reflect on it. Getting the first TVL [title] was nice. Beating Medfield after a long drought was a nice high point. It would have been nice to finish it off this way but [four] goals is not going to get it done in the State Finals,” McLaughlin said.

Jared Spence scored for the Raiders and had an assist. Ben Newbert also had one goal and one assist and Chad Huemme and Brandon Jaeger each scored one goal apiece.

Joey Pasquale led the Wildcats to the title scoring four goals in the game and assisting on the fifth. Kyle Nickerson netted the other goal for Weston.

“We’ve had some great players and they work hard but we just didn’t get it done in the end,” McLaughlin said.
