Dover-Sherborn Boys Hockey Falls, 5-3, To Wayland

The Raiders gave up three goals in the first period.

The D-S Raider boys varsity hockey team lost to Wayland, 5-3, Monday night.

Dover-Sherborn fell into a 3-0 hole during the first period and weren't able to claw their way back in the end.

“They kind of took it to us in the first period. We weren’t really involved in the play as much as I would have liked. We lost a lot of one-on-one battles,” said D-S head coach Mike Balzerini.  “Our first period hasn’t been our best period.”

Condon, along with the rest of the team got the message, dominating the second period, and scoring two goals, while keeping the Warriors from finding the back of the net.

“We got up three, we got a little comfortable. Their goalie came back in and played better,” said Wayland head coach Eric Brown. “We got in some penalty trouble. They have a strong power play and we were able to kill enough off to get the win.”

The Raiders got their first goal from a penalty shot by senior captain P.J. Copponi, who got taken down from behind on a breakaway in the second period.

Forwards Chris Savage and Jared Spence score the other two goals for Dover-Sherborn.

In the third period, the Raiders down 3-2, got out on two breakaways but Wayland goalie Cogan Register was a brick wall, stopping both shots in spectacular fashion.

“Unbelievable,” said Brown. “We’ve been waiting for him all year to win us a game and tonight he did that in the third period.”

“He played really well,” Balzerini said. “We had two breakaways that we missed and that’s huge. He came up big. He made two pad saves on the breakaways.”

With only seconds to go, the Raiders, down 4-3, pulled their goalie to get the man advantage. Wayland senior Mark Haffey hit the post on an empty-netter. The Warriors managed to get a face-off in the Raiders end. Forcing Condon to come back into net and with under twenty seconds left in regulation. Warrior senior Ian Ball scored with 18.9 seconds left to cement the victory for Wayland.

The loss drops the Raiders record to 4-7-2 on the season. While the Warriors pushed their record to 9-4-1 on the year.
