Sherborn Resident Runs Thrift Store to Support Greyhound Adoption

Second Chances in Natick helps support greyhound adoption.

Sherborn resident Louise Coleman offers a different kind of shopping experience for the coming holidays.

In 2008, Coleman opened a thrift store in Natick that would solely benefit Greyhound Friends, Inc., a not-for-profit organization that she founded in 1983 to find homes for greyhounds.

“The main purpose is to support greyhound adoption,” said Coleman of her store Second Chances on West Street in Natick.

The opportunity presented itself when a friend was vacating studio space near the Natick town common on the corner of Route 135 and Route 27.

Most of the items the store sells are donated. The store carries glassware, a variety of dishes, books, small furniture, clothes, jewelry, lamps, prints, frames and CDs.

Coleman said that her sister is a dish enthusiast and picks up different kinds throughout various flea markets and donates them to the store.

The store also sells a very popular greyhound calendar, which they often quickly sell out of.

“We’re always looking for ways to reach out to the public,” said Coleman.

Coleman also has a in Hopkinton. The shelter receives funding from trusts and animal welfare foundations.

She said that even though there are no longer dog tracks in Massachusetts, there are still 13 tracks in Florida that they get dogs from and find homes for. She said it costs them $100 to ship each dog here from Florida.

“It gets more complicated every day,” she said.

Valerie, a volunteer at the shop said around this time of year they have gotten some really unusual ornaments in addition to some beautiful wine glasses.

“Something new comes in all the time,” said Valerie, adding that the store’s business has been picking up lately.
