Morse Institute Hosts The Story of Civil War America in Song

Event starts at 3 p.m. on Nov. 17.

150 years ago on November 19, 1863, four months after the end of this terrible war, Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Today, Beth Canterbury, soprano, and Matthew Larson, piano, create a unique chronology of the Civil War through music. They’ll immerse you in the musical style of the time and give you a fresh look at the war as it evolved. You’ll hear how events inspired songs as well as how music helped citizens share, and reflect upon this remarkable and terrible time.

Interesting, educational, moving and beautiful, the program includes African-American spirituals, songs about Lincoln, songs about specific battles, and songs telling the toll that war takes on individuals. You’ll hear familiar favorites like Deep River, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Home Sweet Home, as well as "art" songs, piano solos, and popular songs written during the war.

Brought to you free of charge by the Friends of the Library.
