Hurricane Irene, One Year Later: What Do You Remember?

There are plenty of storms to recall, but surely Irene is still fairly fresh in the minds of area residents.

Chances are last year at this time, you were scrambling to get a generator, or stocking up on bottled water, maybe even calling relatives to see if the family could move over there for a bit.  Irene hit the edge of North Carolina on Aug. 27, 2011, as a Category 1 hurricane. It was the first of its kind to hit land since Ike two years earlier, and most of the East Coast felt its effects, with 2.3 million under mandatory evacuation orders.  Patches in the area covered the effects of Irene, in a live blog that spanned for days. Massachusetts, Vermont and New Jersey felt the most severe impacts from the storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. The National Hurricane Center reports that 49 people were killed as a direct result of the …

D-S Schools To Open Sept. 1

Dover-Sherborn Public Schools will open tomorrow for the first day of school.

After delaying the first day of school due to safety concerns by school administrators, Dover-Sherborn schools will open their doors September 1. D-S Public Schools Superintendent Valerie Spriggs decided yesterday to delay the first day of school, which would have been Aug. 31, due to the conditions of the roads and the number of residents in both towns without power from Hurricane Irene. Today Spriggs said that crews have made enough progress in the clean up from the hurricane to the point where she is comfortable opening school tomorrow. "NSTAR continues to work on Sherborn roads and progress has been made. It is hopeful all roads for both towns will be open for tomorrow morning. If parents are in doubt or have additional concerns please…

Deductibles Different For Hurricane Damage

Out-of-pocket costs often higher for hurricanes than other kinds of damage.

By Ralph Ellish Massachusetts residents whose property is damaged by Hurricane Irene may discover they’ll be paying more for repairs than expected. The Associated Press reports that most homeowner insurance policies include a deductible that’s typically $500 to $1,000, but out-of-pocket expenses for hurricane damages can be much higher. “In 18 states on the East and Gulf coasts, insurers are allowed to include hurricane deductibles in homeowners policies," the AP reported. "These amounts apply only to hurricane-caused damage, and typically range from 1 percent to 5 percent of the insured value of a home. Deductibles may be higher in some coastal areas. For example, a policyholder whose home is insured for $200,000 with a 2 percent …

Red Cross Seeks Blood Donors to Prepare for Irene

Red Cross ask that those in the unaffected areas donate blood to help out.

From the American Red Cross: As communities along the eastern seaboard prepare for the possible impact of Hurricane Irene, the Red Cross is urging blood donors in unaffected areas to give blood. Hurricane Irene could affect blood collections along the East Coast at a time when the nation’s blood supply is already low. Donating blood now, before the storm, will help ensure blood is available in the aftermath of Irene should conditions prohibit people from traveling to blood drives. All presenting donors in August will receive a coupon for a free box of six pieces of chocolate dipped fruit from Edible Arrangements. Prizes are not redeemable for cash and non-transferable. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or …
