The Assistant Superintendent of a local school system wrote to us regarding a recent Patch article.
Recently, Patch reported that local school systems were among the 125 schools that did not meet the deadline for submitting an emergency response plan before the Sept. 1 deadline. Here is a response from the Dover-Sherborn school system. In response to the recent article appearing in the Dover-Sherborn Patch concerning the reported delinquent status of the Dover-Sherborn Schools' Emergency Medical Response Plans, we wish to offer this correction. The Superintendent of Schools recently worked with the clinical team at the schools in producing an Emergency Medical Response Plan for the school system. The DESE did not regularly communicate information about the Emergency Medical Response Plan regulations to appropriate district personnel…

A sincere note of gratitude from the DS Boosters to the entire Dover Sherborn community. This past Thanksgiving Holiday season, the DS Boosters assembled a team of dedicated sports enthusiasts to celebrate a special time of the year. In a two day span, there were 82 volunteers that came forward to lend a hand on the festivities, 630 students and athletes participating in one form or fashion and 180 people from our community enjoying a feast before the Thanksgiving Day football game. It all started on Wednesday with the Annual Thanksgiving Pep Rally at the Dover Sherborn High School gymnasium. Many accolades were given, a lot of support and dedication noted and a chance to gather not only as a fine institution of learning, but as …

The following letter was submitted by Robert and Roberta Delaney of Sherborn: Massachusetts is a great state and we deserve the best representation to Congress. We support Elizabeth Warren because she will put her constituents first. She is not reticent to speak out and follow through with these concerns as seen in her role in starting and leading the consumer protection agency agency. Elizabeth Warren is forceful, highly intelligent and compassionate, all attributes essential to a Senator from Massachusetts. The middle class and the 47% will not be run over by the unfair concepts of the ultra conservatives with Elizabeth Warren as our Senator in Washington. Roberta and Robert Delaney

Dear Citizens of Dover, I am writing to ask your help for the continued success of the deposit trailer at the Dover Transfer Station. You may know that each month a different Dover/Sherborn sports team or Dover community organization (Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Garden Club, etc.) take turns organizing all the deposit bottles and cans, counting them and then transporting them to Bullards in Medfield to be redeemed. Bullards counts all the items again and then sends a check to the recycling committee (via the town of Dover) who then sends the check to the organization or team. How can the citizens of Dover help? Please be sure that when you are bringing your deposits into the trailer you are bringing only deposit items. NO wine bottles (…

We are lucky to live in these beautiful towns of Dover and Sherborn, surrounded by woods and trails, safe places to work and play and the benefit of excellent public schools. Bridging the gap in distance and opportunity between our communities and Boston is the goal of the METCO program. Claire Toohey used to work for the Boston Public Schools and when she recently relocated to Metrowest, she wanted to keep that connection. Now, as METCO director at the Dover-Sherborn (D-S) public schools, she supports Boston-based students across all four schools and each year sees at least two go on to college; a 100% success rate that has lasted for the past 40 years. Diversity in classrooms helps both staff and students examine their feelings about …

Editor's Note: Jim Byrnes, spokesman for the D-S Boosters said that there have been limited talks between the Boosters and CPARC and that as of now both initiatives are scheluded to go forward as separate projects. He did however say the communication lines will be kept open and the focus will remain on best interests of the community. The following was provided by Jim Byrnes, spokesman for the D-S Boosters. A plan to improve the Dover-Sherborn High School (DSHS) athletic campus to alleviate problems of overuse of the fields was approved by the DS Regional School Committee this past January, and is moving forward. Huntress Associates is now under contract to complete the design details and assist in the selection of contractors to …

Corporations have made employee health and wellness a priority because it directly affects the bottom line. Government has mandated the same for public schools because health and wellness makes students successful in school and beyond. Dover-Sherborn Schools Wellness Policy brings together a dozen important principles under one umbrella and gives students the tools they need for a healthy lifestyle. As part of the 2004 Child Nutrition Act, the US government acknowledged the important role of schools in lifestyle behaviors, requiring them to promote wellness and combat growing rates of obesity and disease. In response, the Dover-Sherborn schools implemented a number of cafeteria changes to improve the nutritional value of school lunches. …

The following is a letter to the editor by Dover Parks and Recreation Commission member Rich Oasis in response to a previous letter to the editor "Letter: Dover Resident Wants Collaboration Between Caryl Park and D-S Schools Field Expansion Projects" Last week the Dover Patch printed a letter from Barbara Palmer, a neighbor of Caryl Park. On behalf of the Dover Parks & Recreation Commission, I wanted to respond to her letter as she raises some important issues. We understand Ms. Palmer’s concern that the cost of maintaining the facilities would fall to the taxpayers a “decade or so down the road.” This is a common concern and we have stated since the beginning of the CPARC project that Dover Parks & Recreation would collect annual field …

Even though 40 hours of community service is a high school graduation requirement at the Dover Sherborn Regional Schools, the outreach and engagement of students in the community begins much earlier, specifically in the middle school’s 8th grade with Community Action Groups (CAGs). Frederick Randall, Dover Sherborn Middle School’s Headmaster, had an idea based on his own experience as a pre-teen in his hometown of Wayland. That experience had made a lasting impression on him, and he had a feeling it would do the same for Dover Sherborn kids. It was a volunteer program encouraging kids to be good citizens and Mr. Randall says it was a way “to make a difference in our own backyard." Three years ago, Mr. Randall took his idea to eighth grade …

+1 to Wade and the crew; when I did the 'deposit run' for the Cub Scouts, he was very helpful letting us know what was and wasn't allowed in the bags for Bullards. And given that in the three hours between my visits on a Saturday, the entire trailer filled up with beer bottles and cans, it was a great help to have them all stacked, bagged and sorted out the way. Thanks again, guys!   more ›
