MBTA Once Again Looking Into Possibilty of Billboards at Rt. 128 Garage

Dedham Town Administrator Bill Keegan said he has not heard from the MBTA of such intentions but the town has been opposed to the idea in the past.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will soon be studying the possibility of placing two billboards at the Route 128 MBTA garage in Westwood near the Westwood/Dedham line. “No final plan has been developed but we do plan to offer a proposal in the near future,” said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. “Under their contract with the MBTA, Clear Channel has the right to that location (subject to T approval of the plan). Engineering studies need to be conducted prior to a formal presentation of a proposal.”  Pesaturo said he did not know when the engineering studies would take place but they "should have a better idea within a month." Dover, MBTA Agree on 99-year Lease for Railroad Right-of-Ways

The MBTA voted for 99-year leases with Medfield, Dover, Needham and Newton.

(A PRESS RELEASE FROM MBTA) The MBTA Board of Directors this week voted to authorize 99-year leases with Newton and the towns of Dover, Medfield and Needham for portions of an abandoned railroad right-of-way for use as a rail trail. The combined leases represent approximately 9.1 miles of a new trail development, known as the Bay Colony Rail Trail. The communities will be responsible for all maintenance and liability.  While the lease is at no cost to the local communities, the MBTA reserves the right to enter into licenses or leases with utility and telecommunication companies to generate non-fare revenue.  The lease contains a reversion clause which allows the MBTA to take back the property at no cost, should it be needed for another …

MBTA Approves Plan To Boost Fares, Cut Service [VIDEO]

The MBTA faces a budget deficit heading into the next fiscal year which begins July 1.

After all of the talk, public hearings, and protests over the past three months, the MBTA Board voted Wednesday afternoon to boost fares 23 percent and cut back service in an attempt to close a projected $161 million deficit in the next fiscal year. Board members approved a plan in a 4-1 vote that would raise most subway fares by 30 cents, bus fares by 25 cents, and commuter rail fares by at least $1.25.  Meanwhile, some cuts in service -- mainly involving bus routes, The Ride, and the commuter rail -- were also approved. The new fares are effective July 1.  Many people showed up at today's hearing and were given a chance to talk during an hour-and-a-half-long "public speaking" session before the vote. They also chanted a chorus of "Shame …

The proposed plan will raise fares 23%.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey and Acting Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority General Manager Jonathan Davis today announced their recommended proposal for closing the MBTA’s $185 million budget gap for next fiscal year.    Under the proposal, the MBTA will use a combination of administrative efficiencies, fare increases, service changes and one-time revenues to close the gap.  In addition, Secretary Davey and GM Davis announced that the MBTA is moving forward on a number of fronts to make riding the T more convenient for its 1.3 million daily riders.  Building on the T’s open data efforts, the MBTA will be working in the coming weeks to make real time data available by text at bus …

An Open Letter from the MBTA to its Customers

The MBTA will be laying out the final budget proposals to fix the massive deficit.

An Open Letter to Our Customers, Over the last nine weeks we have engaged in a public process to allow our riders to weigh in on recommendations for closing a $159 million budget gap next year. As we conclude that process this week, we want to take a minute to thank you for the unprecedented level of engagement you demonstrated over this period. Since January, nearly 6,000 of you attended our 31 public meetings, with nearly 2,000 individuals offering public comment. In addition, we received 5,850 emails from you about the importance of the MBTA in your lives. By comparison, the last time the MBTA raised fares in 2007 just 800 people attended a public hearing. The choices before us are difficult, to be sure. Hearing your individual stories …

Proposals Would Raise MBTA Fares 20-50%

A report in the Boston Globe today says the MBTA has several proposals on the table, but no final plan is in place.

Facing a mounting deficit and increased infrastructure needs, the MBTA is looking at several proposals that would increase fares between 20-50 percent, the Boston Globe reported today.  In documents released to the Globe, one plan prepared for the MBTA looks to increase Charlie Card fares from $1.70 to $2.35 and Charlie Ticket fares from $2 to $3.25.  Another proposal recommends charging $338 for a Commuter Rail pass from the farthest suburbs and $80 for a monthly bus and subway pass. According to the Globe, the numbers behind the proposals were put together by the Central Transportation Planning Staff and were recently shared with members of the MBTA's Rider Oversight Committee. No final plan is actually in place.  However, according to …
